| Accutane |
Do not wax or perform any exfoliation, whatsoever. Skin is highly sensitive and dry. If the skin is exfoliated-which includes waxing-it can be pulled off easily. Waxing can be resumed after a year of discontinuing the drug. Check with the client's physician. |
| Retin-A |
Do not wax or perform any exfoliation on areas receiving Retin-A. Normally, brow arching is permitted simply because Retin-A should never be placed that close to the eyes. Thus, it is permissible to perform an arch. But be sure to verify that the client has not use Retin-A. A client must discontinue the drug in the brow area for five days prior to waxing and not resume until five days afterward. |
| Antibiotics |
Skin sensitivities may occur, as well as susceptibility to infection if the skin is broken. The pH and moisture content of the skin is altered. Cleanliness is vital when working on a client who is taking antibiotics. Their skin is photosensitive, so clients must wear sunblock. |
| Stimulants such as alcohol and caffeine |
The skin tends to be more sensitive. |
| Smoking |
Capillaries may be dilated and the skin may be more sensitive. |
| Severe sun exposure and tanning beds. |
Do not wax on any sunburned skin. Skin must be healed from sun lesions. Do not wax if the client has been in a tanning bed within the past 24 hours. The use of tanning beds is never recommended. |
| Exfoliators - salicylic acid, AHAS, enzymes, scrubs, dipilatory creams |
Depending on skin type and condition, client should discontinue use three days prior to waxing. Resume after three to four days, depending on skin condition. Must not have used dipilatory cream for at least one week or more. |
| Open lesions (acne), cold sores, cysts, boils, growths, inflamed skin, sunburn, peeling or broken skin, cuts, moles, warts, active herpes virus. |
Do not wax. |
| Diabetes, phlebitis. |

| Cancer Therapy- chemotherapy, radiation |

| Autoimmune diseases - lupus, AIDS |

| Blood thinners, I.e., Coumadin |
No waxing withouth a physician's authorization. Clients taking blood thinners can bleed easily. |
| Birth control or hormone replacement |
Skin may be more sensitive, more photosensitive, and more susceptible to pigmentation. Pull carefully to avoid irritation. |
